- W1618115989 abstract "Publisher Summary Microprocessor has an evolutionary effect on experimental physics and instrumentation, as the powerful central machine had on theoretical physics and data processing. This chapter focuses on the role that microprocessors have to play in physics, and how their architecture and the technology used in their manufacture can influence their suitability for a given application. As the microprocessor cannot be considered in isolation from the rest of the system, the performance of the associated peripherals and memory have to be considered before a complete system can be configured, as well as such factors as the availability of suitable software and the different means of linking the constituent parts of the system together. The chapter discusses the integrated circuit technology, the architecture of microprocessor, the memory and peripheral devices, the measuring instruments and analog-to-digital converters, the interfacing and transmission problems, and the typical applications for data collection and analysis in experimental physics. The information that will enable one to decide the best means of choosing and implementing a microprocessor in ones' own particular application in experimental physics or instrumentation is presented." @default.
