- W1618448749 abstract "Several studies regarding the relationship of noradrenergic (NE)-dependent potentiation to N-methy-Daspartate (NMDA)-dependent potentiation, the control of NE-dependent potentiation by NE levels in vivo, the influence of locus ceruleus (LC)-NE on interneurons in the dentate gyrus circuit, and the occurrence of NE-dependent potentiation in awake animals have been summarized in this chapter. Potentiation produced by stimulating the major glutamatergic input to LC from the paragigantocellularis nucleus (PGi) is blocked, as expected, on the intradentate timolol pipette. It is suggested that NE-mediated potentiation is distinct from that initiated by NMDA receptor activation in vivo. It has been demonstrated that NE administered intracerebroventricularly can produce NE potentiation. The duration of the potentiation is related to the dose of NE, although there is inherent variability in the levels of NE that reach the recording site in the dentate gyrus. Three distinct populations of nonbursting cells that are likely to be GABAergic neurons in the dentate hilus have been found. Taken together, there are multiple ways in which NE may promote long-term functional change in the dentate gyrus: by a direct CAMP-mediated effect on granule cells or other cells or inputs of the dentate gyrus, by producing a transient but marked disinhibition of granule cells, and by enhancing theta rhythmicity. While it is likely that even transient LC-NE activation will invariably be accompanied by potentiation effects in the awake animal it is predicted that more pronounced or repeated LC activation will produce NE-long-term potentiation (LTP), as appeared to happen with the first exposure to a novel environment. Memory and learning mediated by LC-NE would, thus, be at one end of a continuum of attentional effects promoted by the LC-NE system, with either level or duration or repetition of NE exposure as the controlling variables." @default.
