Besides its traditional uses, an extremely widearea of use has been developed for this crop in animal feeds, human foods,and other industrial applications; however, soy beans are not adapted tomany climatic conditions. On the other hand, lupines are able to grow underclimatic conditions on soils that soy beans would never tolerate; in fact, thesoil would be improved because the lupine roots fix nitrogen, and croprotation can provide better yields (Feldheim, 1999). Cultivation of lupines isstill limited and has never exceeded 7000 ha per year; the potential plantingarea, however, is estimated at 1 million ha (Imane and Al Faiz, 1999). About90 species have been reported in Mexico, but these wild lupines have notbeen exploited at a commercial level." @default.
