- W1619786619 abstract "C O N C L U S I O N S Total duration of snow cover and its regime is influenced by many factors. Snow cover stability is determined mainly by weather variability, particularly by air temperature conditions and precipitation totals. Significant long-term tendencies have been revealed in SCD time-series at selected meteorological stations in Slovakia within the period of the last decades. In the most of territory of Slovakia we can see profound decrease of total number of SCD in the period around winter peak, however there have been revealed significant increase of this snow cover characteristic in the beginning aw well as in the end of winter (also in the beginning of spring). As mentioned bellow you can find some more detailed information regarding the monthly changes of SCD in Slovakia November: the most notable changes increase in SCD have been found out in the northern and north-eastern mountainous regions (Kysuce, Orava, Mala Fatra and Veľka Fatra, etc.). Revealed tendencies are in good agreement with air temperature decrease in November. December: As it is shown in Fig.8 the character of long-term changes in SCD divide the Slovakia territory into three regions. In the south-western and eastern, as well as north-eastern one there have been revealed increase in SCD. The most of central part of Slovakia, except of the highest mountainous regions, have experienced the significant decrease in SCD. January: the period around the peak of winter have experienced the most widespread decreasing trend in SCD in Slovakia, except of some fragmented region in the eastern lowlands. The most expressed decreasing trend have been revealed in the most of intra-mountain hollows. February: The overall tendency in SCD is very similar to those in December, but there is more profound decrease in mountainous regions in the north. March: As we see in Fig. 17, except of some fragmented regions there predominate decreasing tendencies in SCD. DATA AND METHODS In the paper we analyzed average number of Snow Cover Days (SCD with depth over 1 cm) a for the purpose of the investigation we evaluated monthly mean number of SCD in November-March period within two periods: 1951-1980 and 1981-2009 and 1981-2010 respectively. In the first period (1951-1980) we utilized about 160 meteorological stations. Additional stations, particularly in the mountainous regions, have been interpolated using regional regression models. In the following period 1981-2010 more than 600 rain gauge meteorological station have used in spatial evaluation. Subsequently we calculate a differences of monthly average number of SCD between these two periods using map algebra in ArcGis." @default.
