- W1620121602 abstract "Statistical theories and methods are being increasingly applied in the field of geophysics. Geophysics has made rapid strides in adopting statistical practices and many techniques have been developed for the special requirements of its various component sciences. This chapter describes some of these techniques along with preliminary discussion of some fundamental aspects of statistics. It illustrates a simple method of estimating two normal components from a bimodal distribution. The chapter also discusses the likelihood of occurrence of extreme values and the method for estimating them commonly called the theory of extreme values. It concludes with the description of the statistics of circular variable. Statistical methods are essentially of two general categories namely, descriptive and analytical. Both of these methods largely depend on the theory of probability. The extensive computations required for statistical descriptions or analysis can be done rapidly on modern computing machines. Descriptive methods are those, which compress many figures into a few to represent them adequately for the purpose at hand. However, analytical methods use the descriptive techniques to determine how well the observations agree with the theoretical model that they are assumed to follow." @default.
