- W162172973 abstract "All maximum permissible levels for occupational exposure to radionuclides assume long-term or essentially continuous exposure. Few laboratory experiments simulate these exposure conditions except those currently in progress at Argonne, Utah, and Davis. As part of the general study of a-particle emitters presented in this series of papers, a three-year experiment was completed in which rats were maintained from young adulthood to death on a monthly dosage regimen. The results allow a further study of the effect of tissue distribution, which is different on this regimen from that after a single dose (1), and more importantly, direct determination of life-span shortening, histopathological changes, and other evidences of radiation effect. Blair (2, 3) has already presented evidence that the life-span shortening effects of a-particle emitters show a much greater proportion of irreparable to reparable injury than does X-ray or 7-ray exposure. The present paper presents the growth and mortality data. Histopathological changes, tumor incidence, and correlation with other studies will be presented subsequently. Some additional data for animals receiving single doses are also reported herein." @default.
