- W162334626 abstract "This chapter discusses the physiological functions of thyrocalcitonin. The studies in the pig, using radioimmunoassay, have clearly shown that pentagastrin is highly effective in stimulating secretion of thyrocalcitonin. In both pigs and rats, if the thyroid circulation is intact, the administration of gastrin and pentagastrin can cause hypocalcemia. With the pig it is shown directly that this effect is mediated by thyrocalcitonin. It is shown that injection of porcine gastrin into fasted intact rats produced significant hypocalcaemia between 15 and 30 min after i.v. administration. Other studies in both pigs and rats have established the fact that the hypocalcemia is accompanied by hypophosphatemia. Intragastric solutions of acidic or basic saline have little or no effect on thyrocalcitonin secretion. The thyroid gland shows its usual marked response to intravenous pentagastrin and calcium. Rapid elevation in thyrocalcitonin secretion invariably follows the intragastric placement of solutions of acetylcholine in concentrations of 1–5%." @default.
