- W162335718 abstract "and she points out how abnormally neurotic and even psychotic Michele Lacrosil's heroines seem to her. In reading the novels of the French Carib bean female novelists (including Maryse Conde herself), one is struck by the large number of neurotic or mad female characters. The recurrence of this type of character from one novel to another invites the literary critic to wonder about it because it goes beyond a morbid representation of the Caribbean women.2 This paper will examine how these French Antillean female novelists express neurosis/psychosis as a sign of female alienation in the Caribbean society and how they use these characters as mouthpieces to express their condemnation of either colonial French society or contem porary assisted Caribbean society. As the neurotic/mad character is also the narrative voice, she will be examined also as a literary device and her aesthetic function examined. This study will be centred on four major French Caribbean female novelists who also represent three different decades of Caribbean female writing: Michele Lacrosil (60s), Maryse Conde and Simone Schwartz-Bart (70s), and Myriam Warner-Vieyra (80s). Among the female characters, we have been able to identify the follow ing heroines as neurotic: Veronica (Heremakhonon), Marie-Helene (Une Saisoti a Rihata), Thecla, her mother Tima, her daughter Claude (La Vie Scelerate), Sapotille (Sapotille et le serin d'Argile), and partially Hel&ne,3 (Juletane). Telumee in Simone Schwarz-Bart's Pluie et Vent sur Telumee Miracle as well as her mother Victoire and her grandmother Toussine," @default.
