- W1623362211 abstract "The United States spends more per capita on healthcare than do similarly wealthy countries, according to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation analysis. Health spending, as a share of Gross Domestic Product, rose from 9 percent in 1980 to 16 percent in 2008. More important, the U.S. is an outlier — not only in terms of spending but also with one of the highest rates of spending growth. That analysis also shows that despite this spending, the American healthcare system does not produce better outcomes than similarly wealthy nations.Consumers of healthcare spent $363 billion, or 14.7 percent more for health-care goods and services in 2009 than government accounting indicates, according to a recent Deloitte study. Out-of-pocket medical costs are hovering at $7,600 after taxes, or 21 percent of disposable income, with baby boomers and seniors taking the biggest share. Perhaps it’s that new knee a baby boomer wants to be able to keep running or cycling, or the senior who says, “Hey, 78.7 years is now the average life cycle, so don’t ask me to let go at 80, not so long as I can still drive.” In fact, adults over age 80 are the fastest-growing segment of the population. We’re talking lifecare, not healthcare. And, to top it all, big pharma is rushing to market more biologics that have been barely tested, as reported in the Wall Street Journal. With no end in sight to either supply or demand, we need to be both cost efficient and cost effective. In our cover story, Mike Dalzell queries top experts on what is value and how it can be leveraged to attack high healthcare costs.Bob Carlson details the new Onco-type DX Colon Cancer Assay, a diagnostic test can help keep chemotherapy costs down and put more sunshine into a patient’s life. Mari Edlin and Peter Sonnenreich discuss the new oral medications to treat multiple sclerosis and how they might lower treatment costs. The second annual BFAC Survey of payers and health-care professionals reveals some interesting perceptions of specialty drugs and their value.Check out our new column on federal doings in the healthcare marketplace, which highlights the furor over the pricing of Makena to revent premature birth. Segue to the article by Tom Morrow, MD, on the background of 17P, the active ingredient in Makena, and what the FDA’s actions might mean for payers.Rounding out this issue is Carlson’s story on Axial Biotech’s ScoliScore AIS Prognostic Test for children with scoliosis and how it could save them unnecessary grief and their parents unnecessary healthcare costs.Small steps, all, toward lowering healthcare spending. But look at what one small step did for us on the moon.Enjoy the issue and let us hear from you regarding other subjects you would like us to tackle at moc.erachtlaehygolonhcetoib@srotide." @default.
