Abstract This research has been aimed to evaluate the effects of the in-corporation of brewery sludge (raw and composted) on some indexes of biological fertility, in an agricultural soil of low fertility (Typic Kandiustult). An incubation experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, for 101 days, with the following treatments: a) soil + crude sludge, b) soil + compost sludge and c) only soil (control). Sludge and compost were incorporated in equivalent dose to 3,386 y 37,604 Mg.ha-1, respectively, to give an equivalent quantity of 100 kg.ha-1 of available N. CO2 evolution, and activities of dehydrogenase, urease and acid phosphatase enzymes were determined. Composted and raw sludge incorporation increased CO2 evolution. However, com-posted sludge reduced dehydrogenase and urease activities, while crude sludge reduced urease and acid phosphatase activities. The presence of heavy metals and salts in these materials is likely to be the cause of this effect. Keys Words: Brewery sludge, ultisol, CO2 evolution, dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase" @default.
