- W1625164911 abstract "Structures that spontaneously modulate via a displacive phase transition may be studied by Raman scattering, for there is always one fully symmetric, Raman‐active mode in the new phase not present above the transition. The number and symmetry of such new modes depend on the symmetry of the modulated structure, allowing Raman measurements to verify and sometimes help determine the low temperature structure. The lineshapes of these new modes are sensitive to couplings among themselves and to other excitations, especially near the phase transition temperature where critical behavior is found. Examples of these phenomena will be discussed for three systems: the cell doubling transition in SrTiO3, the incommensurate phase transition in K2SeO4, and the incommensurate and commensurate structures of the layered compounds 2H–TaSe2 and 2H–NbSe2." @default.
