- W16252708 abstract "This chapter describes the molecular ultrastructure of myelin with a focus on normal function and pathological changes that result from myelin disease. Myelinated axons form a complex structure that exemplifies functional cell-cell interactions. The myelin internode can be divided into two domains, compact myelin and noncompact myelin. Compact myelin comprises the majority of the myelin internode that appears by TEM as a lamellar structure of alternating dark and light lines that spiral around the axon. Nonompact myelin provides cytoplasmic continuity between myelin forming cells and various regions of the myelin internode. Myelin promotes rapid and repetitive communication between neurons, and it modulates the maturation and survival of axons. Compact and noncompact myelin membranes are contiguous with each other and with the plasma membrane of myelin-forming cells. However, they differ ultrastructurally and have distinct, nonoverlapping protein compositions. Furthermore, electron microscopy continues to be an essential and irreplaceable tool for elucidating the function of individual molecules and may help identify novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of human myelin disease." @default.
