- W16253700 abstract "In this study we examine the conditions determining the ability of the mother to relate sensitively to her newborn baby. Maternal sensitivity and the social responsiveness of the infant were assessed in the maternity ward. The developmental history of the mother, her personality, and her marital relations were investigated with questionnaires given 4 months after delivery. Maternal sensitivity is shown to depend on (1) the social responsiveness of the baby, (2) the quality of marriage, and (3) maternal personality. The developmental history of the mother does not affect her sensitivity, but does influence the appraisal of her marriage. Four months after delivery, maternal child-care attitudes and perceived “child-difficultness” are shown to be related to characteristics of mother and child as observed in the maternity ward. 18 months after delivery, child behavior problems appear to depend mainly on maternal sensitivity, which can compensate for less optimal characteristics that the child brings to the relationship." @default.
