• W1628991663 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the ultrastructural and histochemical events that occur in the non-myelinated nerves of the glands after post-ganglionic denervations and related, as far as possible, to the physiological phenomena. The long-term changes, usually after preventing reinnervation from the natural source are mentioned. At the ultrastructural level, sympathetic axons of the submandibular gland show degenerative changes after sympathectomy that are similar in appearance and time sequence to those described in the parotid after parasympathectomy—few osmiophilic appearances indicative of degeneration are seen by 24 hours, they were much more plentiful at 48 hours, and they could occasionally be seen 4 days afterward. Thereafter, the secretory cells show a gradually increasing sensitivity to autonomimetic drugs that cannot be solely explained on the basis that the normal mechanisms for removal of the transmitter are reduced. The onset of the degeneration activation has an inverse relationship with the length of nerve that has to degenerate for any one organ, but there are big differences in the timings of the events in different species and in different organs of the same species." @default.
