- W1629342912 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the principles of microdialysis and different probe designs and their in vitro performances over a range of substances, including physiological amino acids, monoamines and their metabolites, neuropeptides, and purines. The potential use of microdialysis probes as chemical releasers remains to be fully exploited. They offer considerable advantages over other methods of chemical release into the brain, because no liquid actually passes into the brain tissue. Microdialysis probes can be used to investigate the effects of one substance on the release of another by pumping one substance through the probe while simultaneously measuring the release of another substance. The limiting factor in microdialysis experiments, as with all in vivo sampling techniques, is the sensitivity of the assays used to measure the substances sampled. However, the increasing reliability of the microbore high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) detection of monoamines and metabolites, or amino acids, and the availability of increasingly sensitive peptide radioimmunoassays have considerably improved the situation." @default.
