The time and scale resolution of the wavelet transformare then discussed in more detail, by working out the transformof simple harmonic functions analytically. As an illustration ofthe power of wavelet analysis, phase mixed Alfv´en waves areinvestigated. A comparison is made between a truly finite har-monic wave and an Alfv´en wave, dissipated by phase mixingand, using the wavelet transform, it is demonstrated that it ispossible to distinguish between these two ‘finite’ signals. It isalso possible to extract the value of the dissipation coefficientfrom the wavelet transform. When considering phase mixingof Alfven waves in a gravitationally stratified atmosphere, the´lengthening of the wavelengths is clearly evident in the trans-form, which provides an independent estimate of the value ofthe pressure scale height. In a radially diverging atmosphere,theshorteningofthewavelengthsisalsoapparentinthewavelettransform, showing how the Alfven speed varies along the loop´and thus providing information on the coronal density and mag-netic field. When applying wavelet analysis to observed wave-like oscillations, it should be possible to infer properties of thecoronal plasma by making a detailed study of the wavelet trans-form.Key words: Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) – waves – Sun:activity – Sun: corona1.
