- W163221340 abstract "Diapause is a characteristic feature of the life cycles in insects of temperate regions synchronizing development with cyclic, seasonal conditions and is important for the flies of interest to me, which belong to the families Calliphoridae, Muscidae, and Sarcophagidae. These flies are numerous in nature and include many species of importance to man. Although the spring-summer part of the annual cycle of development in these flies has been studied fairly well, our knowledge about their winter adaptations remains inadequate. The flies over-winter as larvae, adults, or pupae. Usually the hibernating individuals enter diapause but a few species (e.g., Musca domestica) hibernate without diapause. In Sarcophagids a pupal diapause is most common, in Calliphorids imaginal and larval, and in Muscids imaginal and pupal. As a rule, each species has only one diapause stage but some flies (e.g., Calliphora vicina and C. vomitoria) can diapause as a larva or as an adult or both." @default.
