- W1633370841 abstract "This article begins with further discussion of the differences between the Vulgate and Septuagint versions of 2 Moses 21:22-25 [see Popline 060621]. In the Vulgate a man who causes a miscarriage or premature birth by striking a pregnant woman must pay a retribution to be set by the husband of the woman but in the Septuagint the retribution depends upon whether the fetus is formed or unformed. In the 1st case it is primarily the economic interest of the husband which is at stake while in the 2nd case the status of the fetus as an individual plays a role. bulk of the article is a review of the book The status of the human embryo. Perspectives for moral by G.R. Dunstan and M.J. sellers. book is made up of essays by participants in the Warnock Report from Great Britain. 3 major points of view are represented: the life of an individual begins: 1) at fertilization; 2) at implantation; 3) or gradually during the embryonic and fetal stages. Dunstan who represents the Anglican tradition writes that the fertilized egg is so undifferentiated in its early stages that it is impossible to decide which cells will become the placenta and which will become the fetus. possibility of development of identical twins from a single egg also indicate that the early embryo cannot be held to have an individual human identity until after about 2 weeks. An important moral point is that this view of development toward an individual life corresponds to a very old moral tradition that recognizes that the fetus has a gradually rising worth and right to protection." @default.
