- W1633574178 abstract "This chapter discusses the electronic spectroscopy of acridone, N-methylacridone, acridine, and pyrene adsorbed on silica gel, and describes the assignment of emitting species on a silica gel surface. It discusses factors perturbing the electronic states of organic molecules through the adsorption on solid surfaces. The former three compounds have functional groups, which are expected to contribute to hydrogen-bond formation but pyrene has no such group. Emphasis is placed on the procedures to realize the observation of electronic spectra intrinsic to adsorbed species on silica gel. The nature of a silica gel surface is highly complicated and depends on the various factors, including its preparation. In the chapter, silica gel is activated in two ways. One method is to activate it in the atmosphere; silica gel is heated at 200°C for 24 hours in the atmosphere and then cooled to room temperature in a dry atmosphere. The other method is to activate it in a vacuum; silica gel is heated at 200°C for five hours at a pressure of less than 2 x 10 6 Torr and all the succeeding procedures for adsorption was carried out in a vacuum." @default.
