- W163577982 abstract "When 1953 Millicent Bell argued that Fall Paradise Lost is a psychological drama of gradual defection, she challenged traditional readings of Fall as a distinct deed that divides innocence from guilt and thereby determined shape of an ongoing debate. Bell not only showed that Milton deliberately blurred transition from innocence to experience, but pushed her reading of a gradual Fall Paradise Lost to its logical conclusion when she stated that is, effect, no longer a Fall as Bible plot presents it—there is, possi bly, no longer a Fall at all.1 My reading will urge that we reconsider her ostensibly extreme statement for different reasons. According to Bell, there is no Fall Paradise Lost because Milton was unable to represent a perfect man and woman.2 In my reading, there is no Fall because Milton's Eden is not a place to fall from or a state of inno cence to lose, but a social experiment—the possibility for creating a meet and happy conversation.3 The fundamentally social nature of Milton's Eden is established when Adam asks for a partner fit to participate / All rational delight (8.390-91).4 God applauds Adam's desire for a partner conversation as a sign that he intuitively knows himself and is able to express the spirit within (him) (8.440). Upon Adam's request, Eden becomes possibility for real izing a nice and suttle happiness (8.399) between and an self (8.450). Of course, this possibility is realized only with great difficulty since man, in unitie defective (8.426), must rely on discourse to share an otherwise inaccessible subjective experience. Milton further complicates project of making Eden conversa tion by representing two very different subjects who talk about their unique experiences different ways.5 My reading locates Fall a failure of human conversation, and argues that Adam's discursive style is flawed. As a result, it may seem to support case for a gradual Fall. On other hand, since obstructions to communication (hence, to realization of Eden) are not innate but occur discourse, I could just as easily claim that Adam is ultimately free to revise his speech and choose his fate. However, both Adam and Eve are more complex than these two po" @default.
