- W1636072004 abstract "We have measured the vibrational spectra of hydrogrossular ((Ca3Al2(SiO4)1.5(O4H4)1.5-hibschite) to pressures of 25 GPa. Our results incorporate both Raman-active silicate vibrations (300 to 1200 cm−1) to 25 GPa and Raman and infrared spectra in the hydroxyl stretching region (3000–4000 cm−1) to 16 GPa. For comparison, we have also examined the Raman spectra of anhydrous grossular (Ca3Al2Si3O12) to 14 GPa. Our results indicate that the response of the silica tetrahedra to pressure is similar in both the anhydrous and hydrous mineral, and the reduction in bulk modulus measured for hibschite relative to grossular is primarily a result of the high compressibility in the (O4H4) tetrahedra. We observe no phase transformations in hibschite, including amorphization, to pressures of 25 GPa at 300 K and we conclude that, depending on their thermal stability, calcic garnets could contain stable, structurally-bound hydrogen throughout the pressure range of the Earth's upper mantle." @default.
