- W163704104 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses neurothology of avian navigation. Ethological investigations into mechanisms of spatial orientation and navigation in animals have revealed a rich array of environmental stimuli and behavioral strategies that animals can employ to navigate through space. This observation is probably most strikingly demonstrated in birds, whose complex and often baffling navigational ability allows them to find relatively restricted goal locations, often from very long distances. This study focuses almost exclusively on exploring the relationship among specific regions of the avian forebrain, homing pigeon navigational performance, and navigational learning processes. When returning home from a distant, unfamiliar release site, homing pigeons rely on a map and compass mechanism. Briefly, a homing pigeon would use its “navigational map” to determine its position in space or direction of displacement with respect to home. The environmental stimuli used in the operation of the navigational map have been controversial, although it is clear that atmospheric odors are often used by them. Having established the direction of displacement with respect to home with the use of the navigational map, a pigeon would then rely on an independent compass mechanism to identify the direction to its home." @default.
