- W163908573 abstract "In a devastating and hilarious attack upon the symbolism racket in schools/' Vladimir Nabokov tells us, with self-satisfaction, notion of symbol itself has always been abhorrent to me, and I never tire of retelling how I once failed a student?the dupe, alas, of an earlier teacher?for writing that Jane Austen describes leaves as 'green because Fanny is hopeful, and 'green' is the color of hope.1 Such a preoccupation with the figurative and a twisting of the obvious, against all sense, to fit a preconception of course won't do. But the example is extreme. Like Nabokov in his stand against excess, Ian Watt thinks there has been in Conrad studies something too much of delving for and forcing of symbolic significance. Watt has discussed this abuse at length, with reference to The Nigger of the Narcissus!12 He is quite right but, for all that, a metaphoric dimension of this novel cannot fairly be denied, no matter how much symbol-juggling has gone on? as Watt acknowledges. So much has been said already about the figurative language of The Nigger of the Narcissus that, in truth, for me to say anything more on the subject is perhaps superfluous. Nonetheless, I wish to do so, yet only briefly and addressing myself to implications conventional and seemingly obvious?although, so far as I can tell, the implications have been overlooked except for a mere glance or so in passing. In short, I offer a note to the vexed question of metaphor as it applies to more or-less subtle intimations respecting James Wait and the Narcissus. To begin with, the literal narrative of The Nigger of the Narcissus amounts to less than a compelling story. Such plot-line as it has is commonplace: manned by the familiar miscellaneous crew, the ship voyages from one port to another, experiencing interruptions of routine by reasons of personal idiosyncrasy the standard unexampled storm, the near-foundering of the ship, virtual mutiny, a Coleridgean becalming, and death?all highly usual in sea fiction and become Hollywood stock in-trade. Conrad recognized the ordinariness of all this and, during com position, defended it to Edward Garnett (29 November 1896), As" @default.
