- W1639208843 abstract "The members of the Psychodidae are primitive dipteral of the suborder Nematocera . The family is widely distributed in natural, agricultural, and urban environments of tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates. The family Psychodidae includes six subfamilies, only two of which include species of known public health and veterinary importance—namely, Psychodinae and Phlebotominae . Their body is fusiform or subcylindrical, with three thoracic and nine abdominal segments. Moth flies breed in aquatic and semiaquatic habitats. Sand flies breed in humid, terrestrial habitats. Adult moth flies are common at lights, and in and around breeding sites where suitable resting places are available. They walk with a characteristic, hesitating motion. The adult moth flies are often annoying pests in the neighborhood of the treatment facilities. Sand flies are annoying biting pests in places where they are abundant. Sand fly fever, Changuinola fever, vesicular stomatitis, chandipura virus disease, bartonellosis, and leishmaniasis are the common diseases that are caused by flies." @default.
