- W163949070 abstract "This chapter discusses surface immunoglobulins (Ig) and physiological characteristics of virgin and memory B cells. Virgin and memory B cells can be distinguished by some markers but, in addition, share many markers. Given the substantial heterogeneity of both populations with regard to surface Ig class, turnover rate, migratory pattern, size, lyb antigens, response to T-dependent and T-independent antigens, etc., at present only a few features can be used to distinguish all virgin cells from all memory cells. Studies using the fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS) showed that class of surface Ig could not be used to distinguish all virgin from all memory B cells, as all three classes studied (IgM, IgD, IgG) were found on the surface of subpopulations of both virgin and memory cells. Similar studies using the FACS showed that the commitment of virgin and memory B cells to secretion of a given Ig class after antigenic stimulation is not correlated with the presence of that class on the cell surface. The presence of subpopulations of mature memory and virgin B cells lack at least one of the three major Ig classes (IgM, IgD, IgG) suggests that none is obligatory as receptor for on or off signals of B cell activation. The nature of the signal(s) that produces heterogeneity of cell surface Ig during maturation is unknown. Although surface Ig class cannot be used to distinguish virgin from memory cells, the rate of turnover and migration pattern can be used as distinguishing features." @default.
