The measurements will be performed on crushedpowdered samples inside the Rover’s ALD (AnalyticalLaboratory Drawer). The objective of the presented in-vestigation is to analyze the influence of the crushingprocess on the Raman spectra. This is done by compar-ing Raman spectra of polished solid samples with thoseof crushed samples. The second objective is to study Ra-man spectra of crushed samples with cyanobacteria in re-gard to the discrimination of the cyanobacteria from themineral background. Appropriate measurement parame-ters (e.g. integration time and number of repetitions) forthe determination of the mineral composition as well asthe detection of biological material are derived. A mea-surement regime is proposed for mineral mixtures withcyanobacteria on the basis of the RLS instrument charac-teristics. Sample Choice and Preparation Orbital ob-servations showed that in general the phyllosilicate de-posits do not occur together with the sulphate deposits[1]. Thus the Mars simulant mineral mixture is assignedto phyllosilicatic and sulfatic Mars regolith. The miner-als and rocks are chosen to be structurally and chemicallysimilar to those identified in Martian meteorites [2] andon Mars by recent orbiter and rover missions [3], [4].The Martian analogue rocks and minerals are crushedand only fragments smaller than 1 mm are used for themineral mixtures. The powder is pressed with 4.5 MPato retrieve pellets with a smooth surface for better sam-ple handling. Cyanobacteria are chosen as candidates forpotential life on Mars. Experimental Setup The Ramanmeasurements are performed with a confocal Raman mi-croscope Witec alpha300 R system at room temperatureunder air at ambient pressure. The Raman laser excita-tion wavelength is 532 nm. The spectral resolution ofthe spectrometer is 4-5 cm" @default.
