- W1640336354 abstract "Middle to Upper Devonian reef complexes, exposed extensively on the Lennard Shelf, Canning Basin, northwestern Australia, have undergone little metamorphic or structural deformation. These reefal associations have become known as the 'Devonian Great Barrier Reef'. Carbonate deposition commenced during the middle Givetian and continued into the late Famennian, with two major cycles of reef development. The Givetian-Frasnian reef cycle is considered to have formed during a transgressive phase and is characterised by vertical platform growth punctuated by several backsteps; true reef-rimmed shelves did not develop until the Frasnian. The Famennian reef cycle arguably formed in regressive conditions during slow subsidence, and is characterised by strongly prograding reef-rimmed shelves. Shallow water rugose coral faunas are locally abundant within the Givetian and Frasnian back-reef and upper fore-reef slope strata, but are absent from similar Famennian successions. The majority of corals in the reef complexes are restricted to bioherms and biostromes within the Pillara Limestone. However, they are locally plentiful in the upper fore-reef slope strata of the Sadler Limestone, Virgin Hills Formation and Napier Formation, and in siltstones of the Sparke Conglomerate. Givetian coral faunas have not hitherto been reported from Western Australia. The Frasnian coral faunas are the largest and most diverse so far described from Australia. The Givetian corals are closely similar to those known from eastern Australia, but the latter are considerably more diverse and dominated by different groups (endophyllids and ptenophyllids, rather than disphyllids). The Frasnian corals also resemble coeval eastern Australian forms. Overall, the Canning Basin corals are of limited diversity and are most similar, at generic level, to Givetian and Frasnian European faunas. Three stratigraphically successive Givetian faunas are recognised (in ascending order): the Temnophyllum turbinatum, Careophyllum-Grypophyllum, and Sociophyllum homense faunas. Ten faunas are distinguishable within the Frasnian successions. The oldest (Disphyllum-Argutastrea fauna) is hosted by both platform and fore-reef slope strata. An additional five platform faunas, in ascending order, are designated the Disphyllum? sp. A, Phillipsastrea-Noviphyllum, Disphyllum? murum, Disphyllum incomptum, and Disphyllum patulum faunas. Four fore-reef slope faunas, in ascending order, are: the Peneckiella naniforme, Kuangxiastraea, Thamnophyllum-Hillastraea, and Spinophyllum prolatum faunas. These associations are useful for intra-basinal correlation, and provide a framework for inter-basinal comparisons within Australia. Forty-two rugose coral species referable to 18 genera are described. Two new genera, Noviphyllum and Careophyllum, are erected and are typified by N. canningense sp. nov. and C. brevilamellatum (Hill, 1936) respectively. Eleven other new species are described: Grypophyllum benbowi, Sociophyllum homense, Disphyllum patulum, D. hockingi, D.? murum, Spinophyllum prolatum, Temnophyllum spissum, Chostophyllum apertum, Peneckiella naniforme, P. moniliforme and P. capitanea. New material is described for, or additional observations are made on 13 previously described species: Smithiphyllum coppi Brownlaw & Jell, Disphyllum caespitosum (Goldfuss), D. virgatum (Hinde), D. incomptum (Hill & Jell), Argutastrea hullensis (Hill), Temnophyllum turbinatum Hill, Hillastraea floriformis (Hill), H.? georgeae Brownlaw & Jell, Phillipsastrea sparkensis Brownlaw & Jell, Frechastraea delicatula (Hill), Thamnophyllum kimberleyense (Hill & Jell), Peneckiella teicherti Hill and Kuangxiastraea laciniosa (Hill & Jell). Eleven species are left in open nomenclature due to insufficiency of available specimens." @default.
