Numerous photographs and hand drawn illustrations are used appropriately as visual aids.Section 1 (Animal Biology) progresses logically from the function of the cells and basic tissues to movement of materials within the body, and finally to body systems and functions. Where applicable, the author points out species differences and their significance. A basic introduction and review of genetics is included in this section.The first part of Section 2 (Animal Health and Husbandry) on animal welfare includes the basic freedoms found in most animal welfare acts. Although the sections on public, welfare, and animal collection laws cover the British Laws, they can be used by instructors as a template or a comparative guide to the animal welfare laws in other countries. The sections on health care, disease transmission and control, microbiology, diseases of the dog and cat, zoonones, and parasitology are short and cover the basics. There is a brief but informative chapter on hygiene that covers the proper use of disinfectants and antiseptics. The section on nutrition is very basic and would be of limited value to a healthcare student without more information. The sections on handling and grooming are comprehensive with photographs to illustrate many of the author’s points. A chapter on pets includes biological data, anatomical features, housing and nutritional requirements for the rabbit, guinea-pig, mouse, rat, hamster, budgerigar, canary, and fish.Section 3 (Nursing) covers the basics of clinical evaluation, stabilization, and transportation of an acutely compromised animal caused by an acute illness, poisoning, anaphylaxis, or trauma. Eye injuries, fracture and wound management, and basic bandaging are also included. The author’s concept of the setup of a hospital and the daily monitoring and treating of a hospitalized patient is described. There is a chapter on pharmacy and safe drug administration that discusses the routes of administration, record keeping, and the legal aspects of handling and dispensing drugs. The final chapter covers isolation and quarantine of animals.The derivation of medical terms and descriptions of anatomical directions are briefly described in the appendix.
