- W16408974 abstract "Several existing methodologies quantify the human subjective response tosound stimuli and to vibration stimuli. The concepts of perceived loudness, perceived roughness and appropriateness are familiar in many industrial applications. A subject which has received little attention until recently is, instead, the information content of vibro-acoustic stimuli, and the possibility of tailoring machines for perception enhancement. This seminar outlines research being performed by the Perception Enhancement Systems research group of Brunel University in the area of automobile steering system vibration. The research activity involves laboratory based testing to measure the human cognitive response to vibrational stimuli of various statistical type. The effects of stimuli scale, stimuli bandwidth and stimuli feature content on the human cognitive response have been evaluated. Schemes for enhancing the stimuli in real-time have also been evaluated. An overall objective of the research is to measure the information arriving at the automobile driver from the road surface, and to use the developed information metric to define perception enhancement specifications for vehicle steering systems.
