- W164118051 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents experimental analysis of the role of intracellular calcium in the activation of the sea urchin egg at fertilization. The triggering of development of the sea urchin egg at fertilization results from two ionic events. The first is a transient rise in calcium which most probably triggers all of the early events. Some of these early events somehow result in the subsequent arousal or activation of metabolism. In the case of the sea urchin, the most important permanent change wrought in the cell during this period is the activation of the Na + –H + exchange system. This exchange results in a prodigious extrusion of hydrogen ions from the cell with a resultant increase in pH i from pH 6.8 to pH 7.2–7.3. There are two to three different mechanisms may be involved in determining whether calcium acts directly on the process of activation or through some intermediary molecule. NAD kinase is activated by micromolar levels of calcium in combination with calmodulin. The cortical exocytosis is initiated by micromolar levels of Ca +2 ; the role, if any, of calmodulin is unknown. Lipoxygenase activity is activated by 10 -7 M levels of calcium and activity is probably not calmodulin-mediated. It is possible that domains of differing calcium levels transiently occur in the cell during fertilization and that the activation resulting from the Ca +2 increases is through binding to different target molecules." @default.
