• W1642433650 abstract "The visible luminescence of Er3+ in Yb3+-sensitized YF3-phosphors has been studied under infrared excitation. A new method for phosphor preparation, which allows crystal growth under controlled conditions in a pure N2-atmosphere, is presented. A detailed analysis of the green 4S3/2-4I15/2 emission spectrum is made, and a model for its temperature dependence proposed. The integrated green luminescence intensity Lgr has been found to vary with the infrared excitation intensity UIR as UIR 2.0?0.1 over more than six decades in Lgr, no saturation in Lgr being found at the highest excitation levels from pulsed GaAs:Si diodes. These results and those on the concentration dependence of upconversion efficiency and the transient behaviour of the green emission are consistent with a model involving stepwise excitation transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+, which was previously proposed from similar work in other host materials. Comparing these experimental results for YF3:Yb,Er with published work on YF3:Er and YF3:Yb,Tm, the dominant role of Yb3+ in the upconversion process is elucidated." @default.
