- W164246525 abstract "The initial work on what is now known as retina cognin was carried out in Aron Moscona’s laboratory at the University of Chicago. In fact, the idea of cell-type specific markers was one in which he was an early participant, from the early 1950’s onward. Moscona’s term for these macromolecules was “ligands” (Moscona, 1968). Early observations suggested that there was a conditioned medium activity from embryonic chick neural retina cells which was able to enhance the normal aggregation in vitro of these cells (Moscona, 1963). Although retina cells without the added material would aggregate in gyratory rotation culture, the size of the aggregates was significantly greater (usually several-fold) in the presence of the added material. In all cases, the cells within the aggregates reorganized into histotypic patterns (Moscona, 1956; 1957; 1961; 1962). This activity was tissue specific in that the culture supernatant from retina cells had no similar effect on the aggregation of cells from several other tissues. Lilien, working in Moscona’s laboratory, followed up on these observations and demonstrated that this specific cell aggregation-enhancing activity was independent of serum in the culture (Lilien and Moscona, 1967; Lilien, 1968)." @default.
