• W1642610317 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses several drugs affecting blood clotting and fibrinolysis. A interesting randomized clinical trial on per-operative (twice daily) low-dose heparin thrombosis prophylaxis, performed in 86 elective herniorrhaphy patients, revealed a wound hematoma incidence of 36% in the heparin group as compared with a 7% incidence in the control group treated postoperatively with acenocoumarol. Most of the bleeding seen with thrombolytic agents occurs at the site of venepuncture or arterial catheter insertion. There is an obvious fall in hemoglobin in both urokinase and streptokinase treated patients, often occurring early, but also late. A large proportion of cases developing slight anemia can be explained by blood loss, particularly after diagnostic procedures to demonstrate thrombolysis. Mild elevation of body temperature, the second major untoward reaction to streptokinase, follows the initial dose in more than 50% of the patients treated. Concurrent administration of corticosteroids does not inhibit this phenomenon completely. A marked rise in body temperature with chills may be accompanied by hypotension, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain (particularly low back pain), and very occasionally mild psychotic reactions." @default.
