- W1643965903 abstract "This chapter discusses the study of automatic breathing in man warranted in patients with lesions. Neurogenic breathing disturbances may be caused by several diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system or by metabolic encephalopathies. The chapter discusses the main structures of the central cardiorespiratory network involved in the automatic control of breathing, as well as the abnormalities of breathing, produced by neurological diseases. There are few diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) that selectively affect the nuclei and the pathways involved in respiratory rate generation. The system may be affected acutely or subacutely, as in stroke or multiple sclerosis (MS), or chronically, as in multiple system atrophy (MSA) or syringobulbia. In these cases, symptoms are less prominent and patients may tolerate abnormalities even without respiratory support. The more acute the lesion, the greater is the probability of developing respiratory insufficiency and becoming symptomatic. Polysomnography is most useful to detect the abnormalities of respiratory rhythm during sleep, loss of sinus arrhythmia, or arterial pressure changes during hypoxemic events. Intra-arterial blood pressure recordings constitute the gold standard for a prolonged study of arterial pressure during sleep. Other than this, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques allow the detection of small lesions in the lower brainstem." @default.
