- W1644280936 abstract "Abstract The fauna was investigated from April 1972 to November 1975. Marked sample areas underwater were photographed up to 39 times at intervals of 2 weeks to 4 months. 62 suction samples were collected near the photographed areas in 1974. Though many organisms could not be identified on the photographs, the use of photographs provided valuable information, especially when combined with results from the suction sampling. Tubiculous polychaetes/amphipods and the ascidians Dendrodoa grossularia, dona intestinalis, and Siyela spp., were the most frequent animals on the photographs. 155 species from 22 higher taxa were identified in the suction samples. Most abundant were Amphipoda, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, and Polychaeta. Many of the species are usually recognized as infaunal. The number of species and their ranking based on the frequency of occurrence observed on the photographs, did not change much from year to year, but the density or cover of several species or groups of species (Porifera, Bryozoa, Balanus balanus, Spirorbis, Ophiura, Ascidiacea) did change. Bryozoa and Hydrozoa showed clear seasonal fluctuations. Of crucial importance for the overall faunal composition in the fjord was the heavy settlement of Ciona during spring and summer 1974. The transition of the substrate from hard to soft in the presence of Ciona affected many groups, and resulted in the decrease of epifaunal organisms and increase of infaunal organisms. The presence of Ciona made the substrate unsuitable for subsequent settlement of this species so that on the disappearance of Ciona, the composition of the bottom fauna returned to that which was dominant before the settlement of Ciona. Several taxa had fewer species in Borgenfjorden than in the neighbouring Trond-heimsfjord, probably mostly due to the higher amplitude of temperature changes in Borgenfjorden. Erect species seemed to be better adapted to the hard-bottom substrate in Borgenfjorden than encrusting species, probably a result of heavy silting." @default.
