- W164429130 abstract "When a sandstone reservoir is filled with oil or drained for oil, the heavy (C 5+ ) part of the oil will to a large extent remain in the pores due to the strong capillary force that exists between the hydrocarbons and the rock matrix. This imprint of heavy oil in cores allows invaded zones to be distinguished from non-invaded zones based upon the concentration and composition data resulting from chemical extractions of core samples using dichloromethane as solvent. In this study, the occurrences of heavy oil in cores are correlated with the porosities in four Barents Sea oil reservoirs. Zones that are presently being filled with oil show an increasing saturation of heavy oil with increasing porosity, whereas drained zones show a decreasing saturation with increasing porosity. The results also indicate that heavy oil is not displaced from clastic reservoirs by leakage if the porosity is less than 11 ± 1%. A classification system for oil traps is proposed according to the fundamental relations seen between oil contents and porosity. A Type I trap is a trap which is being filled or is at its apparent maximum level of filling. A Type II trap has had its oil column significantly reduced, whereas a Type III trap has had its oil column destroyed. In an exploration area like the Barents Sea a classification according to this system may yield valuable information upon migration, seal and leakage factors during prospect evaluation." @default.
