- W1645591837 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter examines the mechanistic interpretation of stratospheric tracer transport. Some 3D model calculations of transport that are designed to take advantage of the insights available from the quasi-Lagrangian isentropic coordinate perspective are presented. Two tracer experiments have been designed to illustrate the physical processes. The first tracer experiment is designed with a very simple initial condition. The tracer mixing ratio is set on model date, 1 January to be equal at every point to the local value of potential temperature. In THETA tracer experiment, many aspects of the interpretation are particularly simple when the tracer is compared against the contours of the potential temperature. The THETA experiment shows a systematic evolution of tracer relative to isentropic surfaces, compatible with a downward mass flow in high latitudes and an upward one in low latitudes. In the first couple of months this flux is larger than that implied by the zonal-mean diabatic circulation alone. An argument is presented on how an eddy diabatic effect can systematically augment the transport by the zonal-mean diabatic circulation." @default.
