- W1646067914 abstract "Ozone is an important component of the photochemical oxidation product of air pollution involving substrates emitted from automobile engines. It is mainly generated from hydrocarbons and nitrogen dioxide in the presence of ultraviolet radiation. Average levels are usually lowest in the winter and highest in the summer, with concentrations usually peaking in mid-afternoon. Annual average levels of ozone in industrialized countries range from 20 to 40 parts per billion, but concentrations of 100 ppb or more are often reached. Attention has been drawn to the potential adverse effects on respiratory health because of its potential toxic effects related to its oxidative properties. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown the occurrence of symptoms and a decline in lung function even after short-term exposure to ozone. There is an association between short-term levels of ozone levels and hospital admissions for respiratory disorders in subjects with preexisting lung disease. Long-term exposure to ozone is associated with symptoms of chronic respiratory disease and with an annual rate of decline of lung function. With acute exposure studies, ozone causes a transient reduction in lung function. Patients with asthma show a greater response than normal subjects. Ozone also causes an increase in bronchial responsiveness to methacholine." @default.
