- W164714114 abstract "ABSTRACT The chapter describes an information retrieval system under development, which makes use of, rather than simulates, the strength and flexibility of humans in dealing with incomplete, uncertain, and inconsistent data. The interaction between the user and the system, for inputting, categorization, and retrieval of information, is in natural-looking English based on simple keyword analysis and the relational database model. A preprocessor makes it possible for the user to supply data for new or existing knowledge bases in a high-level manner, either in a uniformly structured or unstructured mode. The primary information structure built at input time is then converted into redundant list structures and associative networks. The system continually tests the data for consistency and completeness, and informs the user thereof. Information is organized in a hierarchical fashion. At the lowest level, data are contained in atomic nodes. Certain retrieval queries may produce results that are worth storing in composite nodes. Bidirectional edges connect nodes, and are labeled with syntactic and semantic restrictions and other data to enhance the controlled traversal of nodes in the network. There is a multitude of descriptors associated with the information in the node, such as attribute-value pairs, synonyms, processes applicable to and by the item in question (actions involving the entity as an object and as an agent, respectively), supersets, subsets, processes capable of regenerating the item in question, and commonalities. The user can select one of five automatic clustering algorithms that suits his needs best. The user may approve the outcome of the clustering process or initiate changes in it. A cluster contains one or several nodes characterized by some level of similarity or commonality. It can be created and recreated on-line to serve a family of retrieval requests. A plane contains one or several clusters and can also be dynamically created or recreated by the user. Both clusters and planes are labeled by data common to each of their constituents. The labels are compared with the retrieval query, and a program orders on this basis the planes and clusters to be entered according to the expected level of success of locating in them the item sought. The retrieval request consists of a variety of descriptors, which may be fuzzy, incomplete, and even inconsistent. The user can specify the level of importance of each descriptor and how certain he is about its being true. These are then combined into a match factor, which is in turn used in computing the level of similarity between the item attached to a node and the one looked for to be retrieved. The most satisfactory item obtained in every cluster and plane entered so far is kept on record. The user may be satisfied with the result at any time and stop the search or else continue it until, eventually, the whole database is processed. The expected power of the system is likely to make us pay a heavy price in terms of processing time and memory requirements. If feasible, we are willing to do so with the first version. The problems of tuning and optimization will be left for later efforts." @default.
