- W164831102 abstract "Average monthly salaries of municipal government employees in selected office clerical occupations were higher than their private industry counterparts in 9 of 1 1 large cities examined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A smaller majority of the cities also showed a pay advantage over private industry for data processing and for maintenance and custodial groups of occupations. In Kansas City and New Orleans, however, city workers generally were paid less than private industry employees for equivalent work. Comparisons of selected municipal government office clerical and data processing occupations with equivalent work levels for Federal Government employees (GS-1, 2, 3, and 4) indicated a pay advantage for municipal employees in all the cities surveyed except Kansas City and New Orleans. This article compares municipal workers' salaries with private industry and Federal Government pay. The municipal government occupational wage data are from a new BLS program in which 22 city governments were studied in 1970 and 1971.1 Information from 1 1 of these cities was available when this" @default.
