- W1648707575 abstract "We present Raman spectra of high-temperature superconducting single crystals of ${mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${mathrm{Cu}}_{4}$${mathrm{O}}_{8}$ and ${mathrm{Y}}_{2}$${mathrm{Ba}}_{4}$${mathrm{Cu}}_{7}$${mathrm{O}}_{15mathrm{ensuremath{-}}mathrm{ensuremath{delta}}}$, differing from the well-known ${mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${mathrm{O}}_{7mathrm{ensuremath{-}}mathrm{ensuremath{delta}}}$ by having double CuO chains. By performing polarization-dependent measurements, we were able to identify the symmetry of the observed phonons. In both materials, we detected four out of six Raman-allowed modes of the double Cu(1)-O(1) chains and assign the peaks to Cu(1) ${mathit{A}}_{mathit{g}}$ (250 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$), O(1) ${mathit{A}}_{mathit{g}}$ (605 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$), Cu(1) ${mathit{B}}_{3mathit{g}}$ (314 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$), and O(1) ${mathit{B}}_{2mathit{g}}$ (228 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$) in addition to the 5 ${mathit{A}}_{mathit{g}}$ phonons (in ${mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${mathrm{Cu}}_{4}$${mathrm{O}}_{8}$ near 104, 153, 341, 438, and 500 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$), which are also present in the well-known ${mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${mathrm{O}}_{7mathrm{ensuremath{-}}mathrm{ensuremath{delta}}}$. Contrary to previous reports of Raman scattering on double-${mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$-plane superconductors, ${mathit{B}}_{2mathit{g}}$ and ${mathit{B}}_{3mathit{g}}$ phonons can unambiguously be observed.They are, in fact, stronger than some of the ${mathit{A}}_{mathit{g}}$ phonons. The peaks at 605, 314, 250, and 228 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$ are more than twice as large in ${mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${mathrm{Cu}}_{4}$${mathrm{O}}_{8}$ than in ${mathrm{Y}}_{2}$${mathrm{Ba}}_{4}$${mathrm{Cu}}_{7}$${mathrm{O}}_{15mathrm{ensuremath{-}}mathrm{ensuremath{delta}}}$, thus confirming that they are chain related. The Raman intensities of the ${mathit{A}}_{mathit{g}}$ modes at 250, 500, and 605 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$ are much larger in yy (along the chains) than in xx polarization, proving that the crystals are untwinned and stressing the importance of the chains for the Raman activity of these modes. When lowering the temperature below ${mathit{T}}_{mathit{c}}$=74 K the ${mathit{B}}_{1mathit{g}}$-like O(2)-O(3) phonon near 104 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$ as well as the Ba ${mathit{A}}_{mathit{g}}$ phonon at 341 ${mathrm{cm}}^{mathrm{ensuremath{-}}1}$ exhibit a rather sharp softening. The Ba mode shows a pronounced Fano line asymmetry, while that of the O(2)-O(3) line is rather weak." @default.
