- W164890919 abstract "Studies of the cooling rates obtained by evaporation and radiation to the night sky from horizontal surfaces indicate that passive cooling could meet a large proporation of the sensible cooling loads of residential and commercial buildings in the United States. Systems in which the roof acts as the heat dissipating surface have the dual advantage of being well coupled to the sky and not adding the water vapor produced by evaporative cooling to the air in the building, thus extending their applicability to the more humid areas of the country. Comparisons of the simulated performance of several alternative systems of coupling the roof to the thermal storage and to the people are presented. The heat transfer processes operating in four different designs are discussed. Thermal simulation assumptions are listed and uncertanties noted. Simulation results are presented for three systems in San Antonio and for one system in Miami and Phoenix. The roof pond system was found to have the best thermal performance; this is attributed to the negligible thermal resistance between the dissipating surface and the storage, and effective heat transfer by both radiation and natural air convection between storage and the space. However, thermal coupling of the dissipator andmore » the storage by pumped water and by a combination of radiation and natural air convection also proved effective.« less" @default.
