• W1650492012 abstract "Modes of the quartz-to-rutile transformation of GeO2 and the successive structure change of pressure-induced amorphization were investigated under various pressures and temperatures by X-ray diffraction study. Instabilities of the α-quartz form and amorphous phase were clarified under high pressure. the amorphization is confirmed to be a precursor phenomenon of the transformation of GeO2 from quartz to rutile form. At ambient temperature, quartz-to-rutile transformation was not observed up to 25 GPa but the pressure-induced amorphization was brought about at a little higher pressure than 6.5 GPa. It is caused by the deformation of the framework with the tetrahedral configuration and mechanical breakdown of the crystallite size without change of the tetrahedral coordination. With further increasing pressure, nucleation of the octahedral coordination is induced in the GeO2 amorphous phase. An increase in the population of the octahedral coordination forms the clusters or microdomains. Only a little heated condition at 85°C derives the crystallization of the rutile form structure directly from quartz form under a little compression at less than 0.1 GPa. But the rutile form structure is hardly crystallized from the amorphous phase only by pressure energy at ambient temperature. the recrystallization of the α-quartz structure from the amorphous phase was not confirmed on decompression." @default.
