- W165162169 abstract "Reactive oxygen species play a key role in the deterioration of the immune functions. The accumulation of oxidative damage and the dysregulation of redox homeostasis in leukocytes during aging dramatically affect their function and survival, negatively impacting the immune system. The modulation of redox homeostasis through antioxidant supplementation has been used as a strategy to preserve or restore functionality of the immune system in the elderly. Vitamins or micronutrient-based supplementations have shown beneficial effects on the immune system of older adults, ranging from improved immune cell signaling and survival to restoration of normal immune function. Although the exact mechanisms are still unclear, and while the supplementation modalities are yet to be optimized, these reports strongly support a beneficial role for antioxidant supplementations of the immune system during aging, particularly in individuals with nutritional deficiencies." @default.
