• W165492783 abstract "Retinol, also known as vitamin A, is essential for life. Retinol in the human body is produced by a series of metabolic processes that begin with dietary intake of β-carotene and retinyl esters. Retinoic acid (RA) is one of the most potent physiologic metabolites of retinol. Retinol and RA are essential for pre- and postnatal development of the lung and for the induction, maintenance, and regeneration of differentiated epithelial cells in the proximal and distal parts of the lung. These effects are mediated mainly through the nuclear receptors RA receptor and retinoid X receptor. RA-bound dimers of RA receptors and retinoid X receptors transactivate RA target genes complexed with numerous transcriptional coactivators. Recent observations that exogeneous RA regenerates alveoli septum damaged by elastase in a rat model suggest the possibility of using retinoids or novel targets in the retinoid signaling pathways involved in the regeneration of the damaged alveoli to treat emphysema. Some natural and synthetic retinoids used to prevent or treat several types of tumors have been clinically effective. Better understanding of the biologic effects of retinoids and their target genes regulated differentially in normal and cancer cells will help researchers exploit the beneficial aspects of the retinoids for the prevention and treatment of cancers." @default.
