- W1655027725 abstract "In a magnetosphere that is closed except for open tail lobes extending to infinity, the addition of small patches of open flux on the magnetopause along a streamline leading from the dayside to the flanks produces a series of isolated flux tubes that form elongated ionospheric footprints fanning outward from the cusp. The cusp is the only point of contact between the footprints and the polar cap. If the patches convect with the magnetosheath flow, as proposed by Sonnerup “1987”, then the footprints rotate about the cusp and feed into the polar cap at dawn and dusk. The closed flux sandwiched between the rotating footprints must also move with the flow. The net flow pattern is a large-scale convection cell with a mixture of open and closed flux flowing antisunward on the poleward edge, which maps out to the low latitude boundary layer. Formerly, the convection cell for the low latitude boundary layer was thought to be driven by a viscous interaction between the magnetosheath and closed magnetospheric field lines, a mechanism separate from reconnection, which presumably drives the major convection through the polar cap. However, in the proposed model, no mechanism other than reconnection is needed to drive both polar cap and low latitude boundary layer convection." @default.
