- W1655079914 abstract "RUMINAL FERMENTATION CHARACTERISTICS IN PERIPARTURIENT DAIRY COWS FED WITH DIFFERENT ENERGY DENSITIES DURING THE TRANSITION PERIOD After parturition, dairy cows are fed diets rich in readily fermentable carbohydrates that lead to rapid production of volatile fatty acids (VFA), possibly resulting in ruminal acidosis (RA). This study investigates the effects of transition diet during the last few weeks of pregnancy as regards RA control in dairy cows. Therefore, a total of 4 Holstein cows were randomly allotted to two treatment groups: standard diet (6 weeks prepartum); and low or high nonfiber carbohydrate (NFC) diet (2 weeks postpartum). After parturition, all cows were fed the same diet formulated to withstand the demands of early lactation. Diet with high levels of NFC provided a larger (p<0,01) rumen surface area (10,7m 2 ) for VFA absorption than the low NFC diet (7m 2 ). Furthermore, ruminal VFA absorption was higher (p<0,01) during the postpartum period than in the prepartum period, which is probably related to the high energy density diet. This result indicates that nutritional manipulation of the rumen wall absorption capacity is an important strategy to control RA." @default.
