Touted as a period of robust economic expansion, in retrospect, the Reagan years did not produce unusually high growth in total output, resulted in relatively high overall unemployment rates, and ushered in a new era of increased economic instability [May, forthcoming]. During this period of disappointing growth, women and minorities became especially marginalized. The Reagan reversion to pro-market policies in an age of corporate hegemony altered the structure of the economy and had a significant influence on some groups in society. In particular, promarket policies increased instability and accelerated the simultaneous decline of high-paying manufacturing jobs and the rise of poverty-wage employment [Bluestone and Harrison 1982]. Reaganomics ushered in an era of economic instability with record rates of business and bank failures and farm foreclosures.
