- W1658898942 abstract "Studies investigating initiation of use of psychoactive substances and progression to more serious levels of abuse typically focus on adolescents. Adolescents are usually studied because this is time when most substance use begins. Substance use can be viewed as part of developmental process. That is, substance use is a way for adolescents to experiment with adult behavior and roles, to establish individuality and autonomy, and to join with peers. Stage or sequential models have been constructed by researchers to describe and analyze initiation and progression of substance use in adolescence. The Macdonald and Newton model is called Adolescent Chemical Use Experience (ACUE) continuum. The ACUE is a four-stage model of adolescent substance use with stages defined in terms of mood swings—that is, a mood swing is defined as the effect of a substance on internal, subjective state of person consuming substance. It is well established that almost all adolescents experiment with psychoactive substances, but relatively few progress to point of substance abuse. The risk factors are identified for use or abuse; knowledge of these variables still does not totally resolve question as to who will progress beyond initial use or experimentation. The relative influence of a given factor appears to vary depending on stage of use." @default.
