- W1660072147 abstract "Histone phosphorylation is usually a direct outcome of activated intracellular signaling pathways, and functions to translate extracellular signals into appropriate nuclear biological outputs. This chapter highlights the diverse signaling pathways that converge onto chromatin, the kinases that phosphorylate specific residues on the different histones, and the various cellular processes that are regulated by this modification. It also discusses and highlights some of the advances that functionally link histone phosphorylation to multiple cellular functions such as transcriptional activation, DNA damage response, and mitosis, as well as apoptosis. Many of the upstream signaling cascades that lead to histone phosphorylation have been well defined and their correlative downstream effects have been documented. Finally, it states that there are still many questions regarding mechanisms mediated by histone phosphorylation that need to be answered. Phosphorylation is a dynamic modification, and the H3 phosphorylation/dephosphorylation cycle linked to the activation/repression of IE genes occurss within minutes to an hour. While the activation process has been studied extensively, the mechanisms that mediate H3 dephosphorylation and transcriptional repression have largely been neglected. Future advances in research are being undertaken to provide a more complete understanding of how phosphorylation of histones translates signal transduction pathways into specific biological responses." @default.
